SUBJECTIVE FRAME
Born 1954. Attended State University College at Buffalo, NY, majored in art, and received a bachelors degree in 1976. It wasnt until college that I had any concept of what was difference on in the art world. My idea of being an artificer as a kid was a courtroom mechanic or whizz of those boardwalk artists who do caricatures. My parents had a book of, like, the one hundred one beautiful paintings, which included Dali and Picasso among the most new-made artists.
In 1981, Sherman had her first one-person exhibition, which made rounds through New York, sugar and Genoa, Italy.
Conceals her identity through her photography. Sometimes she acts as an omnipresent narrator, merely also, as in 1977s Untitled Film Stills series, is the main computer simulation and protagonist. Although, the majority of her photographs are pictures of her, these photographs are most definitely not self-portraits.
Seldom consents to interviews and even more infrequently allows herself to be photographed out of character. patronage constant reappearance in her photos, her public persona clay elusive. Im not really an eloquent person. I dont think artists should be the ones that have to explain their work. Thats why there are critics and journalists. I figure, let the work speak for itself and let other pack figure it out.
Her work has been shown in more than 75 solo exhibitions and as part of over 150 group exhibitions. lxiv museums collect her prints.
In 1996, Sherman produced a film, Office Killer, in which a secretarial assistant exacts her revenge for corporate downsizing. In 1999 she was named one of the Top 10 Living Artists by ARTnews magazine.
